The Music:
This power-trio delivers a truly devastating form of heavy rock. Its easy to
picture a giant earth-moving machine, overladen with horsepower and iron, rolling ever
forward leaving leveled rubble in its wake. And at the wheel you will find some
drug-addled, poetry spouting redneck, dedicatedly doing a hard
days work.
The History:
Sludgeplow was formed in January, 1991 by bassist Chad Hartgrave, drummer Pete
Prentice and guitarist/singer Jeff Cornell. As the band jammed in the basement of an Iowa
farmhouse, a churning, sluggish mire was born. This has become the signature sound of
Sludgeplow.
Within two months the trio had written and recorded their debut; a self-released released cassette entitled "turned earth". In the following year, Sludgeplow assaulted the Iowa music scene with their sonic abuse and built a strong local following.
In may of 1992 Pete left the band, sending Sludgeplow into what would become six years of drummer changes and set backs.
First enlisted was Bill Coney, who helped initiate an eight month tour of the western United States. Bill was later replaced by Bob Hall who helped continue and finish the tour and later played on Sludgeplows second cassette release, "everything". It is worth noting that both Bob and Bill had previously played in both the Iowa beef experience and scorched earth policy.
Bob later returned to Iowa beef and was replaced by Eric Kranz who participated in an intensive eleven day tour and the recording of a project that would later be the 1999 release, "coleslaw". It was not long, however, before yet another Sludgeplow drummer was gone.
In 1995,after playing many local and regional shows and struggling to write music without a permanent drummer, Jeff and Chad thought it was time for a change of scenery. So they headed west to Seattle to join forces with Mark Bruggeman, formerly of Voodoo Gearshift, their seventh drummer. Over the next two years, however, Sludgeplow laid low while Jeff and Chad pursued tattooing careers and the music took a back seat.
It almost seemed that Sludgeplow was finally done until Chad met with Scott Driscoll. Scott is another Iowa native and a seasoned drummer. He had spent some time in the Kansas City/Lawrence area with a band called Black Calvin and had moved to Seattle with another group called the stunt mummies. Scott had been looking for another project and Sludgeplow was it.
Sense the spring of 1998, Sludgeplow has released the "coleslaw" recordings on cd, toured to the Midwest and back, recorded and released another ep-length cd called "hash", toured again to the east coast and back and greatly increased their local following. In short, they have been busy as hell.
Despite the set backs over the years, Sludgeplow has always delivered heavy, thick, beautiful sonic mayhem. Chad and Jeff have always felt that the music was the important thing and with Scott they have found a likeminded and talented skinsman. Together they have been proving again and again at every show that it doesnt get much heavier than this.
